The best investment is understanding the market

Relive the market. Learn to read it.

Go back to any day of the last five years, open its options chain and buy or sell by hand, at that day's real price. Then move forward session by session and decide when to get out: you learn from the basics, with mistakes that cost you nothing.

  • Real closing prices
  • No broker, no card
  • 13 lessons to get started
  • In your browser
This chain is not a live market: it is the close of January 5, 2024, a day that already happened. Whatever you buy here fills at the price recorded that day.
First step of the lesson “Buy 100 shares and let time pass”

How you practice.

  1. 1

Go back to a specific day

Pick a ticker and a past date. The chain appears exactly as it closed: bid, ask, volume and open interest.

  2. 2

    Buy or sell by hand

Tap the ask to buy and the bid to sell, at that day's price. For example: AAPL's 215 call at $8.90.

  3. 3

Move forward and decide when to sell

Session by session, the chain tells you what it is worth. On August 29 it paid $15.90 for it: +$700.

Why Tickerback

Options are the most versatile tool in the market. Almost nobody learns to use them well.

With an option you can insure your shares, get paid to wait for the price you want, or fix in advance how much you put at stake. The tool doesn't fail: the way it is learned does.

The problem

Taught with theory

Formulas and textbook examples, with no real chain in front of you.

On TickerbackHere you practice on the chain that closed that day, with its real prices.

The problem

Learning costs money

In a real account, every mistake is paid for.

On TickerbackHere the capital is virtual: you make mistakes for free and repeat until it clicks.

The problem

A backtest gives you the result in one go

It runs the whole period at once: you see the end, not each day's decisions.

On TickerbackHere you move session by session and watch your position evolve.

The same call, told two ways.

+$430

Tells you how it ended: at expiry.

Sep 20, 2024 · AAPL $228.20 · +$430
−$5000+$500Aug 9Aug 22Sep 6Sep 20
On August 29 the chain paid $15.90 for it: +$700. On September 16, $3.50: −$540. At expiry, +$430. You decide when to sell, and that is only learned by watching it day by day.

Real closing prices of the AAPL 215 call: each session's bid (Intrinio) and, at expiry, its intrinsic value. No estimates.

Relive the market

The market already happened. You can go back.

The basics

Six words to get started.

With them you can already read an options chain. Each one is practiced in a lesson, with prices that existed.

Call
Lesson 6
The right to buy 100 shares at a set price until a set date. It gains value when the stock rises.
AAPL 215 call: the right to buy 100 shares at $215 until Sep 20, 2024.
Put
Lesson 3
The right to sell 100 shares at a set price until a set date. It gains value when the stock falls, which is why it works as insurance.
175 put expiring Apr 19, 2024, to insure 100 shares.
Strike
Lesson 3
The set price of the option: the price it lets you buy at, for a call, or sell at, for a put.
In the 215 call, the strike is $215. With AAPL at $228.20 at expiration, it is worth $13.20.
Premium
Lesson 5
What you pay to buy an option, or collect when you sell one. It is quoted per share, and a contract is 100 shares.
215 call bought at $8.90: you pay $890 per contract.
Expiration
Lesson 4
The day the option stops existing. On that day, only where the stock closed matters.
The 215 call expired on Sep 20, 2024, with AAPL at $228.20.
Bid and ask
Lesson 3
The ask is the price you buy at; the bid, the price you sell at. The gap is what getting in and out costs.
215 call on Aug 9, 2024: bid $8.70, ask $8.90.

Options, explained from the very beginning.

You don't need to know what an option is. The course starts by buying shares, and each lesson adds a single idea on real days from 2024. You move on when the platform checks that you've done it.

Every step is checked

The lesson only moves on when you make the trade it asks for, on the date it asks for. If you get it wrong, you see it on the chain and try again.

Pro Team

Share with your team, on any screen.

Three accounts practice on the same prices. One builds the strategy on a laptop; the others open it on a phone or a tablet, with the same legs on the same day.

  • Three accounts, one plan

You pay for two yearly accounts and the third is free. Each one has everything in Pro.

  • Invitation by email

You invite each person with their email, and they join the team when they accept from their account.

  • Same strategy, same day

What you share opens exactly as it was. Each account tests it with its own virtual capital, from $1,000 to unlimited.

  • Outside the team, a link

Whoever opens it sees the strategy; with Pro they can save it and work on it. You can revoke the link at any time.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

What people who are just starting tend to ask.

Do I trade with real money?

No. Every order is virtual and fills at the prices recorded on the date you choose. Tickerback does not connect to any broker.

Do I need to know about options to start?

No. The first lesson starts with buying shares, and each one adds a single idea, all the way to spreads and straddles.

Where do the prices come from?

Options chains and closing prices come from Intrinio. Institutional activity is rebuilt from public SEC 13F filings.

Is the data intraday?

No. Each day shows the chain at the close: bid, ask, volume and open interest. To replay a session minute by minute you need an intraday simulator.

Which tickers can I use?

On Free, AAPL, NVDA, BAC, XOM, KOP and PLAB, and you can add packs of extra tickers. On Pro and Pro Team, as many as you like.

How do extra tickers work?

On Free, each pack costs $9 and opens up to 5 tickers you choose for 30 days, when you buy it or later, under the same Free rules. Buy as many packs as you like and renew them in one click; each ticker you choose stays in its pack. From seven packs on, Pro works out cheaper and opens them all.

What are Pro packages?

Tools that join Pro. The first is institutional activity: the 13F funds on the chain. The next, Arbitrage radar, will highlight on each day's chain the arbitrage trades the platform finds. They are cases to study on closing prices, not investment advice.

What do the lessons cover?

Thirteen lessons of 6 to 12 minutes on real stretches of 2024 with AAPL: from buying shares to spreads, straddles and your own thesis. Every step is checked on the platform. Lesson 13 is about sharing a strategy, so it is completed on Pro. More lessons are on the way.

Which languages is it in?

The app is in English and Spanish.

Is there a mobile app?

Tickerback works in your phone's browser. The iOS and Android apps are on the way.

How much does it cost?

The free account needs no card. Pro costs $59 a month, or $49 a month billed yearly, with a 30-day trial. Pro Team costs $1,176 a year for three accounts. Each pack of 5 extra tickers on Free, $9 per 30 days.

Can I cancel?

Yes, whenever you want, from your account. Paid access stays active until the end of the period you have already paid for.

Can I share strategies with my team?

Yes. With Pro Team, three accounts share strategies with each other and each one tests them with its own capital. With someone outside the team, share it with a link: with Pro they can save it and work on it.

What if someone shares a ticker that is not in my plan?

You see it read-only: you can't save it or change it. To work on it you need Pro, with unlimited tickers.

Is this financial advice?

No. Tickerback is an educational tool. It does not recommend trades or manage money, and results on past data do not predict future results.

What personal data do you process?

What your account needs. This page uses no cookies or analytics; inside the app, analytics only turns on if you accept it. The details are in the privacy policy.
